Since 1994, BDA has become recognized as a thought leader with a reputation for independent, innovative and provocative thinking.
Our thought leadership is evidenced in our published research and our client advice in areas relating to the Telecommunications, Media and Technology (TMT) and Education & Training sectors as well as the Private Equity flows which are benefitting these and other fast-growing sectors fueled by surging consumer spending in the region.
BDA has developed a reputation for independent thinking. In 1995-1997, going against prevailing wisdom at the time, BDA advised its clients against participation in the 'China-China-Foreign' investment structures in China's second telecom operator Unicom. Our position at the time was that because it was effectively competing with its own regulator, the new entrant was destined to face insurmountable challenges. Our position was vindicated when USD 1.4 billion in these of investments were ordered unwound by the regulator in 1998.
As the Internet flourished, BDA was there from the outset and known for sound advice in the run up to the dotcom investment bubble of 1999-2000. BDA's research and investment advisory assignments relating to the Internet in China established our reputation in this sector, whose companies today represents hundreds of billions of dollars of equity market capitalization.
After Internet sector valuations deflated massively from 2000 - 2002, BDA was first to highlight opportunities in the burgeoning mobile value added services sector in China, enabling us to create substantial returns for our institutional investor clients.
As private equity flows have expanded rapidly into other sectors of the Chinese economy, BDA is at the forefront of research into key sectors for China's future development including the education & training, consumer discretionary and alternative energy sectors. Our experience in advising on hundreds of projects in these sectors has given us a leading position in understanding and quantifying risks for private equity firms. BDA also serves public equity fund managers through custom consulting and on-going sector tracking.
