TD-SCDMA: Future or fiasco?
On April 1st 2008, after a year spent building the network and conducting various tests, China Mobile finally launched its TD-SCDMA “commercial trials” under the ‘ShareFun' brand in 8 cities: Beijing, Guangzhou, Qinhuangdao, Shanghai, Shenyang, Shenzhen, Tianjin and Xiamen. Although no official data on user feedback and subscriber numbers has been released since the launch, BDA has conducted its own assessment by purchasing devices and trialing the service as well as analyzing press and industry reports. This Analyst Note evaluates the key features of the current trials, points out the challenges ahead for further take-up and expansion of TD-SCDMA, and assesses the chances for a successful way forward for China's homegrown 3G technology.
