P&T Expo Wrap: Restructuring, TD Impact

Held from 21st to 25th October, this time at a new venue – the Beijing International Exhibition Centre adjacent to Beijing Capital Airport - P&T Expo has long been the most important fixture in the Chinese telecom equipment and handset vendor calendar. This year's event offered an interesting opportunity to gauge the impact of the recent carrier restructuring and the renewed ‘surge' of government support for TD-SCDMA. The effects of the restructuring were evident in the focus this year on convergent services and applications, as all three carriers now feature both fixed and mobile offerings. Signs of the competition ahead were seen in the prominence of customized and touch-screen handsets, reflecting the need for a more hands-on role of carriers in a post-3G world, and the iPhone effect. TD-SCDMA has featured at P&T Expo for years, and a trend towards and increasingly domestic look and feel for the event was sustained this year. This year was different though in that China Mobile stood alongside the TD vendor camp.
