The Olympics' Digital Legacy
The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games was an opportunity for China to demonstrate to the world its prowess in sports and the construction of impressive stadia, but also to showcase its achievements in ‘informatization' to the world and to its own citizenry. Already the reality of having achieved the world's largest mobile and Internet population was something that China could rightly feel proud of. The Olympic Games had a major stimulus effect on the communications sector, boosting wireless value added services and online advertising. Yet China also attempted to go beyond this by exploiting the Olympics to showcase to the world its own homegrown technologies in 3G (TD-SCDMA) and mobile TV (CMMB). How successful were the Games in promoting the current policy of “indigenous innovation”? In this note we explore the short and longer term impact of the Games on China's communication sector.
